Application of Topology optimization method for gearbox production

Xtrac parts company applies 3D printing technology and Topology optimization methods to produce gearboxes for the Czinger 21C supercar.

Czinger 21C is probably a foreign name to many, but die-hard fans of supercars have probably heard of this name.

First appearing in March 2020 at an event in London, the 21C is a supercar made by Czinger, the US-based automaker.

The Czinger 21C uses a twin-turbocharged 2.9L V8 engine block with a flat-plane crankshaft producing 1,233 hp. To achieve such a huge level of power, the V8 unit has combined with a pair of electric motors equipped on two wheels in front of the supercar.

The Czinger 21C is equipped with a 7-speed sequential gearbox so that the user can control the car accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h in less than 1.9 s. The car possesses a maximum speed of up to 407 km/h.

Similar to other well-known automakers, Czinger has the advantage of applying engineering science to optimize the power of its model. And in the case of the 21C, the American automaker has applied 3D printing technology and the Topology optimization method.

Topology optimization is the method used to optimize the design of a detailed product based on the initial conditions. These conditions can be the size, volume or location of that detail in a given space.

Combining Topology optimization with 3D printing technology, Czinger teamed up with Xtrac gearbox manufacturer to create a 7-speed sequential gearbox.

The gearbox on the Czinger 21C is designed according to this method in order to ensure the overall volume of the car. Besides, it still allows the user to control and feel the movement of the car in the most complete way.

The performance of the gearbox is optimized when the gearshifts will be processed not up to 100 ms. Thanks to this, the combination of movement between the electric motor in the front pair and the V8 block in the rear pair is very rhythmic.
